How to feel comfortable in front of the camera

Whether they me know up front or it’s something I notice during the shoot, almost everyone has some amount of anxiety when it comes to being in front of a camera. In order to make the most out of your experience and get the most out of your investment, I have put together a list of recommendations to help you out.

Relax

Take a few deep breaths. Bring your focus to the present moment.

When you are absorbed with where to stand and what to do, it is unlikely you will act natural. Do not worry about entertaining the camera. The camera is here for you and to share on your behalf. You alone are amazing and have a fascinating story to tell just by being you.

For the most part, I will encourage you to focus on one another and share moments together. If you do decide to turn towards the camera, look at me as if I were a friend along for the adventure. This is all about me capturing authentic moments. Those aren’t something you have to fake or feel nervous about. They just happen naturally… so let them.

Consider what your photographer is doing in a quiet moment

If I am not guiding you into a pose or racing circles around you or walking towards or away from you while snapping, chances are I’m making exposure adjustments within my camera, reviewing the progress, evaluating my shots or brainstorming on-the-fly ideas to keep the creative flow going.

During these moments when you might be wondering what to do next, I recommend you carry on as you were. Do not assume you need to change anything, unless of course you want to.

See yourself through the eyes of those who love you

Almost all of us have some sort of recurring confidence issue. It’s different for everyone, but it is so easy to over-analyze let our thoughts run away with themselves. Whatever confidence issue you are tormenting yourself with–let it go.

When I think about the people I cherish, I am overwhelmed with love for them as-is. Shift your perspective and be kind to yourself. Trust me and open up so I can capture images of authentic moments that your loved ones long for.
